History of kimono

The heian era...

The heian era (A.C.794 to 1192)
The Japanese royal family worn a Heiansyouzoku as their special cloth.
Until now, styles of kimono for common people at that era has not been cleared.

The kamakura/muromachi era (A.C. 1192 to 1573)
Hitatare had been debuted which was based on mizuhiki for common people at that period.
During the kamakura era, hitatare became a formal dress for samurai class.

It came to the muromachi era, hitatare became the first class-ed formal dress for them.
Then Daimon and Suou also had been debuted.
Kimono for women became simplierby age. Mo got shorter then converted onto hakama, then disappeared.
After that, kosode which as covered by koshimaki, yumaki, was worn.
At that age, uchikake had been debuted as well.

The first term of the edo era (A.C. 1603 to)
Kimono became simpler and kamishimo which combined kataginu with hakama, was familiarized to public.
It was a kosode boom as pop culture and drama boom such as kabuki came out.
When dress designs for actors and actresses were introduced on nishikie or ukiyoe, dressing style of the common people became more fashionable.
However, the edo shogunate tried to restrict it by saving regulation due to confucianism, the people were even more fashionable.

Due to influence of tea ceremony, the people preferred to things with or covered by gold even though its appearance was quiet.
Cords for kimono had been developed such as obimusubi or kumihimo, then obi has been tied up at back until now.

The final term of the edo...

The final term of the edo era (A.C 1750 to)
Due to national isolation, silk import had been stopped and almost all silk came from inside of Japan at that period.
Among common people, some worn chirimen which was relatively cheaper even though it was silk.

From 1783 to 1788, Tenmei famine happened,
The edo shogunate banned them to wear any silk textile so that they had to wear cloths which was made of cotton or hemp only.
Furisode for wedding had been developed by booming of long tamoto for women.
Kinmono no hen in 1864 (kind of political accident), the edo shogunate raised an army for chosyu conquest.
They decided to wear western army uniform,
meanwhile, Harubei Morita as a trader in otenba-cho got an order from them and he made it for 2000 persons with trial and error.
It was the first time to produce massive western uniform as far as it is recorded.
